In December 2019, the Columbus Crew made a splash when it signed Argentine midfielder Lucas Zelarayan with the largest acquisition fee in club history.
Zelarayan had an instant impact with the club and quickly became one of the most popular players in Major League Soccer.
In his first year with Columbus, Zelarayan was named the MLS Newcomer of the Year and helped lead the Crew to an MLS Cup title.
Following the 2020 season, the MLS announced Zelarayan had the 23rd most popular jersey sold through the league's online store. This year, Zelarayan has climbed the list even further and has the 16th best-selling jersey.
So far in 2021, Zelarayan has made 25 starts and has appeared in 29 matches for the Crew. He is second on the team with eight goals and five assists. He leads the team with 75 shots and 26 shots on target.
Zelarayan was also named to the 2021 MLS All-Star Team.
Looking to keep playoff hopes alive, Zelarayan and the Crew will take on Orlando City SC Wednesday night at Lower.com Field. Head coach Caleb Porter will not be available for the match after being entered into MLS Health and Safety Protocols on October 19.
