Many times when we report on an individual being arrested in Manitowoc, there are charges of bail jumping attached to that arrest.
During a recent visit with Lee Douglas on WOMT’s Be My Guest Program, Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer explained what exactly bail jumping is.
“If somebody is out on bail, it means they did something or has been charged with something allegedly,” Reimer said. “So they get released on bail with certain conditions of their bail,. And when they break those conditions, they are charged with Bail Jumping.”
If the charge they break those conditions on is a felony, their bail jumping charge is also a felony.
A listener asked the Chief why people are continuously hit with bail jumping charges, which Reimer responded to by saying that’s a question for the judges and the District Attorney.
“Everybody, the judges, the DA’s office, and defense attorneys, they all have rules they have to follow. As long as they are doing that, we just have to understand that that’s the system,” Reimer said. “Eventually…it does catch up with the criminals.”
He also said that he understands why the listener would be frustrated with the ongoing issue because, as he said “We get frustrated as well. If someone is out on bail or on probation and they commit another crime, you would think that would be enough to say enough is enough.”
