ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony, conducted by Dr. Christopher Stanichar, will open its season on Nov. 6 with a concert at Northern State University.
The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will take place in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.
Celebrating its 102nd season, AUCS is the oldest continuous orchestra in South Dakota, attracting musicians from Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and the surrounding area. Stanichar, Assistant Professor of Music at NSU, is the 17th conductor of the orchestra.
The concert will feature Dr. Fritz Gechter, Associate Professor of Music at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. A native of the Pacific Northwest, pianist Gechter has performed as soloist and collaborative artist throughout the U.S. and abroad. He received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Central Washington University, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance from The University of Texas at Austin.
The concert will feature performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” by John Smith (arr. Walter Damrosch); Waltz, from Masquerade by Aram Khatchaturian; Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez; Capriccio Espagnol by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; and Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor’ by Ludwig van Beethoven. Also, there will a Pre-Concert Conversation scheduled for 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Berggren Recital Hall.

All tickets to the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony are general admission and will be available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty/staff. Students will be admitted for free. Payment will be cash or check only; debit or credit cards will not be accepted. There will be no advance or online ticket sales.
