Lorine Petersen


 

 

Funeral services for Lorine Petersen, 96 of Giddings, were held on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner and Vicar Josh Hahn officiating.

Lorine Petersen was born on March 23, 1925 in Anderson, Texas to Charley Carl Leiber and Emma (Heyman) Leiber. On April 26, 1925, she was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Anderson, Texas by Rev. W.P. Urban. She was confirmed on April 2, 1939 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Port Arthur, Texas by Rev. Arthur Rathjen.

Her confirmation verse was Isaiah 54:10,” For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.” Lorine married Arthur Petersen on August 24, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas. While living in Port Arthur, she worked for F.W. Woolworth, Western Union, and the Local 4-23 Oil Chemical & Atomic Workers Union for twenty years. After moving to Giddings, Lorine worked as the bookkeeper for OK Sales for eleven years and was the secretary to the principal at Giddings High School for fourteen years. Lorine has always been active in her community and church. She was one of the charter members of the Giddings Study Club, served on the Giddings City Council, served as Mayor Pro Tem, worked at Rejuvenation, and was hostess at the Giddings Senior Center. Her years of public service was recognized when she received the Outstanding Giddings Citizen of the Year Award.

Immanuel Lutheran Church was also blessed by her involvement. Over the years Lorine sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, visited those that were sick or shut-in, and was involved in LWML through Ladies Aid and Dorcas Circle. She was known for her coffee cakes and enjoyed taking them to Bible studies and other community functions.

Lorine enjoyed being outside working in her garden and loved being in the sunshine. She will be remembered for her strong faith, caring spirit, and joyous heart.

Lorine passed away the morning of Monday, October 18, 2021 at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charley & Emma Leiber; husband, Arthur Petersen, and sister, Evelyn Eddins.

Lorine is survived by her son, Larry & Marilyn Petersen of La Porte; daughter, Pam Lara of Hurst; four grandchildren, Damon & Renee Lara of Arlington, Tim & Wendy Petersen of New Mexico, Philip & Jana Petersen of Houston, and Yolanda & Michael Fowler of Highland Village; eight great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren, and numerous extended family and friends.

Pallbearers were Damon Lara, Timothy Petersen, Philip Petersen, Alan Albers, Randy Albers, Terry Albers, and David Albers.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Dorcas Circle, Immanuel Church Choir, Camp Lone Star, or to the charity of one’s choice.
