Jefferson City teen crashes trying to avoid deer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 16-year-old Jefferson City boy crashed his SUV on Tuesday night when he swerved to avoid a deer in the road, police say.

The crash happened in the 3700 block of West Edgewood Drive and the driver had moderate injuries, the Jefferson City Police Department said in a news release. The SUV went off the road, through a barbed-wire fence, hit a tree, rolled over and came to rest on the driver's side in a creek with about 6 inches of water, police said.

Firefighters extricated the teenager and he was taken to a Columbia hospital with moderate injuries. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt. One lane of the road was closed after the crash.
