Local government notes include early voting in Athens, redistricting in Elberton

New hospital facility for Braselton

Turnout continues to be light for the early voting that comes in advance of next Tuesday’s municipal elections in Winterville and Watkinsville, with mayor and city council seats to be decided. There is also a school district sales tax referendum on ballots in Athens, and a transportation sales tax referendum for voters in Oconee County. Early voting ends Friday; election day is next Tuesday.

Elbert County Commissioners meet in a special called session set for noon today at the County Government Complex in Elberton: they are scheduled to vote on new a new Commission district map, with lines that were redrawn based on the results of last year’s census.

The City Council in Bowman has signed off on a $1 million plan for water system upgrades. Bowman will get the lion’s share of the funding in the form of a loan from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority.

Northeast Georgia will soon have the option for outpatient surgery at a new surgery center in Braselton. Northside Hospital in Atlanta has received a Certificate of Need for the new facility. The 22,500 square foot center will go in an existing facility on Friendship Road in south Hall County and is expected to serve patients from 13 north Georgia counties, Franklin, Stephens, and Hart counties among them.
