Emmerdale - Why is the writing for the Tates and Sugdens so awful compared to the Dingles?

Rant Pending. Updates from here, spoilers and Youtube clips so sorry if wrong!

Joe Tate
He returns for revenge on the Dingles which we knew he would never win against the shows favourite family.
Then he gets written out (with no recast pending) before having scenes with his other family members.
His background was a shambles of his time away and contridicted everything the Tates had been through in the 90's that created such a toxic dynamic.
Why cast the actor when he barely stays in anything for more than 5 minutes? He ruined Mark Junior Fowler in Eastenders too. Two of the most awaited characters for years.

Jamie Tate
Crap actor.
Don't get me started on the name, he is JAMES TATE!
Then he gets "killed off" which means another Tate is gone!

Andrea Tate
Was there any real need to kill her off?

Millie Tate
Does she really need to leave to go and lve with some lost relative so yet again we lost another Tate?

Kim Tate
When is she going to be written out I wonder?
Barely any past references, barely any interactions with characters in it in her original stint, no real background about her time away and no return of significant characters.
She has no friends and now she literally will have no family around her as they even killed her husband Graham Foster off!

Baby Tate
I will give that baby 18 months before it is no longer a character in the show and is shipped off somewhere.

Noah Dingle
Did he need to be renamed Dingle in the first place and he is a Dingle by name and nature too so it feels pointless recognising him as Chris Tates son.

Dead Tates - Basically there is no chance of them returning to build up the family sadly.
Chris Tate
Frank Tate
Jean Senior Tate
Liam Hammond

Zoe Tate and Jean Tate
The chance of a recast is slim I would say but maybe, just maybe we might see the character return.
I am really hoping we finally see Jean and that they do not ruin her. No hopes there though.

The Sugdens
We are losing Diane Sugden very soon but has barely been used properly in like the last decade.
Victoria is the most uninteresting woman in soap and is lumbered with Harry Sugden who will be of no use for a long time to come.
Sarah Sugden and Jack Sugden are effectively Dingles (seeing a trend her with the new generation being basically Dingles?)

Why has Andy Sugden not been recast and why on earth have Robert Sugden been locked up for so long? The EP's ego so the character can not be used due to their Robron obsession?

There are too many dead Sugdens to mention sadly!

Dingledale.

I'm curious - which Dingles do you think are well-written at present?

This is actually the least Dingle-focused I can remember the show being since I started watching in 2008.

I just think none of them ever seem to leave and they own the majority of businesses and are linked to practically all families on the show.
It is just overwhelming which seems odd I know but sick of the site of them and this moral need that they are always right.
It has been this way for well over a decade now.
I do not feel the Dingles are written into corners at all though.
24 members of one family is excessive and that is not mentioned the love interests that have kids by them or are in relationships with them etc.

I definitely see what you mean, but I feel like the only Dingle at present who pops up a lot in central story is Charity, and maybe Sarah after her. There are times Chas pops up and gets way too much airtime, sometimes Marlon too, but not as much as in past years. Many others we don't see much of these days.

I do think the show has done a poor job writing for their family units, It's a very sad, longstanding issue.

I admit I no longer an a regular viewer so maybe in fairness you are actually right.
I am just shocked there are only in comparison in the months ahead...

    24 Dingles
3 Tates (1 of whom is a Dingle)
4 Sugdens (2 of whom are Dingles)

In 2009 his name was changed to Sharma and then Macey when Charity married Declan. By 2015 it was changed to Dingle when she divorced Declan if I remember correctly.

Emmerdale businesses (have I left any out?)

The Cafe - owners - Brenda, Nicola, Jimmy
The B&B - owners - Eric, Diane (soon to be just Eric
The Vets - owners - Granny Foster, Paddy, (Vanessa?)
The shop - owner - David
The Woolpack - owners - Chas, Marlon, Al
The Beauty Salon - owner - Mandy
The Garage - owners - Debbie, Ross
The Home James - owners - Jimmy, (Robert?)
Holey Scrap - owners - Aaron, (Robert?)
Home Farm Estate - owner Granny Foster
The HOP - owners - Granny Foster & Jai
The Wedding Plannery - owners Leyla, Andrea's estate
Chapman & Fletcher Fitness - owners - Ellis & Billy
The Doctors' - owners - Liam, Manpreet
    Butler's Farm - owners - Moira, Rhona

The Dingles are not a nuclear family, they are an extended family comprised of a number of nuclear families and various odds & sods.

Personally, I'm not the least bit bothered about the name that a character bears. What's important is how well characterised the character is, how well played and how good the writing is for them.

Many of the Dingles are of types typical to soaps. If they were not in the show, then there would be others of that type in their place, just bearing different names, and more likely less well characterised. That would be a purely cosmetic change, not a change of any susbstence, and probably a change for the worse.

The current Memememememememememememememememememememememeaner storyline has featured no Dingles whatsover (Chas, April, Marlon & Paddy were little more than cameos). The problem with it, for me, is that nearly all the characters were fairly new and relatively undercharacterised, or brought in for the specific purpose, and I cannot find it in my heart to give a jot for any of them. That's why the whole thing, for me, was utterly underwhelming.

@Teifiboi summed it up for me - “ The Dingles are not a nuclear family, they are an extended family comprised of a number of nuclear families and various odds & sods.”

To me the Dingles seem like lots of distinct groups and individuals. And given that - like a lot of soaps, Emmerdale is quite bad at writing and sustaining friendships - I appreciate the relationships between the various different Dingle individuals. Charity in particular - her interactions with Marlon, Chas, Cain, Mandy etc are always believable and nuanced. Similarly, the way other Dingle characters relate to Sam always strikes me as plausible.

That said, I do agree that it’s a shame that the combination of bad writing and actor departures has had such a negative impact on both the Tates and the Sugdens. I’d love to see one (if not both) of the Sugden brothers back (recast if necessary), likewise Joe and Jamie Tate.

They should never have killed Joe off all these years ago. He would have still been popping up every now and again to this day with Fraser Hines still around and active. It would have been a link back to the very first episode.

I love this post so thank you so much for posting it!
I have bolded all the Dingle owned property and it still seems excessive in comparison surely?
It seems really irrational on my point but I just seem to clump them as one.
I think it dilutes the family feel and they just remind me of breeding rats. For instance how many kids does Zak, Cain and Charity actually need lol

    There's Wylie's (which l now think belongs to H).

Oh, and Charity is a part owner of Home James Haulage and l'm sure Cain bought out Ross' share of the garage too just before he left (with a suspiciously thin envelope of cash delivered by Moira, and ???why it's still called Barton & Dingle)

    Thomas Tate

    Jean Tate

    Sarah Sugden
    Jack Sugden
    Robert Sugden
    Victoria Sugden
    Harry Sugden
    Andy Sugden
    Sebastian White

Let's face it, this list of adopted and blood related members is rather small for a family created in 1990 and 1972 sadly.
The Dingles have literally 5 times this as potential returns.

Looking back after watching old Emmerdale clips it is shocking to see how underutilised the other families are compared to then.
