NEW LONDON — Fourth-seeded New London-Spicer proved to be ready for postseason football with a 42-6 victory over fifth-seed Melrose in the first round of the Section 6AAA playoffs Tuesday.

The Wildcats play Saturday at No. 1 Albany (6-2). Albany had a first-round bye.

“It’s a really bruising conference that we play in, but we’re a real battle-tested team and they were ready to prove themselves,” Wildcats’ head coach Chad Gustafson said of the Melrose win. “Our kids played awesome offensively and defensively in the first half and it carried over into the second half.”

Wildcats’ sophomore Mason Delzer recorded 67 yards and three touchdowns on eight rushing attempts.

NLS was going for perfection in the first half, scoring a touchdown in each of its five possessions, starting with a 2-yard run by Delzer and followed by a 65-yard pick interception return by Gavin Degner moments later.

The Dutchmen scored their lone touchdown with a 10-yard run by junior Lucas Feldewerd, but muffed the snap, resulting in a failed conversion.

Despite holding a 35-6 lead at halftime, Gustafson wanted to see his players continue to play hard in the second half.

“We told them we wanted to get a stop early,” he said.

The Wildcats answered by recovering a fumble on the kickoff.

Following the fumble recovery, Delzer scored his third touchdown on the first play of the drive, leading to the 42-6 win.

Gustafson noted that the Wildcats will immediately begin preparing for the Huskies.

“Albany is really well-coached,” he said. “We have a nice rivalry and we certainly had our share with them.

“We‘re excited to play them. We respect them and it should be a great high school football game. We hope to extend our season a little longer and potentially have a shot at playing (for) the section title.”
