The Sonora Wildcats are the new leaders in the Mother Lode League football rankings after a home win Friday night against Argonaut High School from Jackson.
Sonora (5-3 overall, 3-0 MLL) prevailed 28-21 over the former No. 1 Mustangs to remain undefeated in the MLL and take first place heading into the final game of the season Friday against cross-county rival Summerville.
Whichever team finishes first in the MLL gets an automatic berth in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Argonaut (6-3 overall, 2-1 MLL) will look to remain in the running for a playoff spot by closing out the season against the winless Amador Buffaloes, who are 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the MLL.
Bret Harte High School did not field a varsity football team this year due to a lack of players. This was the first full regular season since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in a shortened spring season without playoffs or league champions being named.
