Teresa Berganza has been named Patron of Honor of the Teatro Real in Madrid.

The Institution’s Board of Trustees proposed the honor at a meeting that took place on Oct. 5, 2021.

Berganza has been linked to the Teatro Real since the period when it was a concert hall and subsequently performed there numerous times. After the reopening of the Teatro Real as an opera house in 1997, she sang numerous concerts and did many masterclasses under her pedagogical program.

On June 21, 2013, the Teatro Real organized a Tribute Gala for Teresa Berganza to celebrate her 80th birthday which was presided over by Queen Sofía. During the gala, Berganza received the Gran Cruz de la Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio from the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, José Ignacio Wert.

The Teatro Real recently dedicated 15 performances of “La Cenerentola,” which opened the season. Berganza was a renowned interpreter of the title role.
