Avengers: Endgame Was Supposed to Kill Off All Six Original Members

Avengers: Endgame featured the death of two key members: Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. But as it turns out, they were originally planning to kill off all the original six members of the team.

Per Screen Rant, according to the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige originally proposed to have all original six members be killed off by the end of Avengers: Endgame. However, the Russo brothers pushed back on the idea.

The book said, "'Kevin's initial pitch was that it was Toy Story 3 - a 'they're all gonna jump into a furnace together' concept,' reveals Joe Russo. The brothers' pushback was that there was no possible way for the story to be able to take the time to celebrate each one of them. And that, for the fans, it was an impossible scenario to walk out of the theater and process."

The Russo brothers are right that it would have been difficult for them to commemorate if all six original members would die by the end. It would have also been overwhelming for the audience and it might feel bleak for them since those characters have been the cornerstone of the franchise. It's hard to imagine them going in that direction since it would be a ballsy move and it would also change the entire future of the MCU as it would mean that they would move forward with the original heroes.

As we all know, by the end, only four members ended up surviving the events of Avengers: Endgame. Captain America became Old Man Steve at the very end of the film and there are reports that he would appear in another MCU project soon. Thor will appear next in Thor: Love and Thunder. The Hulk's next appearance is set to be in the She-Hulk series. We will get to see Hawkeye very soon in the Hawkeye series that is set to premiere next month on Disney+. In addition, Black Widow appeared one last time in the film Black Widow that was released last July.
