BEIJING, China. — The Beijing Marathon is one of China’s largest sporting events, however, on Sunday, organizers postponed this year’s race indefinitely as a result of surging COVID infections three months before the city is hosting the Olympics.

The BBC writes that the race, held annually since 1981, traditionally begins at Tiananmen Square and ends in Olympic Park.

Around 30,000 people were expected to take part in the marathon, which was scheduled to happen on October 31, according to the BBC.

Marathon organizers told the BBC it was canceling the event, “in order to prevent the risk of the epidemic spreading (and) effectively protect the health and safety of the majority of runners, staff, and residents.”

Park City is set to send as many as dozens of representatives, from athletes to officials to coaches, announcers, and commentators to the Beijing 2022 Olympics and Paralympics.
