Zach Wilson shares NFL's interception lead with elite company

Few have come close to Patrick Mahomes’ production in recent years, but Zach Wilson is his equal … in one undesirable way.

The Chiefs and Jets quarterbacks are tied for the league lead in interceptions after seven weeks of play. Mahomes and Wilson both have nine picks after each left their respective games early on Sunday.

Wilson did not throw an interception against the Patriots before leaving in the second quarter with a PCL sprain that will sideline him for 2-4 weeks. Mahomes, meanwhile, threw his ninth pick against the Titans before exiting in the fourth quarter to get checked for a concussion. He was cleared before the game ended but did not return due to precautionary measures.

New York and Kansas City lost on Sunday.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are playing below their usual standards, but the 2018 MVP has Wilson handily beat in the categories a quarterback wants to be leading. Mahomes has the edge over Wilson in wins (3-4), completion percentage (67.5-57.5), yards (2,093-1,168), touchdowns (18-4) and rating (97.9-63.5).

With Wilson now sidelined, a few quarterbacks will likely surpass him in interceptions while “challenging” Mahomes for the highest total in the league. Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow and ex-Jet Sam Darnold have all thrown eight picks this year.

Lawrence’s Jaguars had their bye in Week 7, while Burrow and the Bengals will play the Jets in Week 8.
