PARMA, Ohio -- One-stop trick or treating is exactly what the Young Professionals of Parma are offering families at their inaugural Trunk or Treat.

The fun affair is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 28) in the 8303 Day Drive parking lot of Make Believe Family Fun Center.

“Trunk or Treat is a win-win,” Young Professionals of Parma Membership Director Nina Parson said. “Some parents might still be concerned about their kids going out trick-or-treating in crowds or spending a long time outside.

“We’re also looking for ways to not only give back to the businesses in our community, but give back to the people of our community. So you can safely walk through this parking lot while getting to know more local businesses. And at the same time, your kids are having a great time.”

Businesses will not only decorate the trunk of a vehicle in Halloween décor, but also hand out candy as trick-or-treaters walk from car to car. Families will get the opportunity to vote on their favorite trunks.

While the event is free for families to attend, businesses are paying $25 each to participate. Proceeds from the Trunk or Treat will go to support Young Professionals of Parma’s efforts.

“There are 35 businesses that are going to be giving treats,” said Parson, a New Philadelphia native who has called Parma home for 12 years.

“We also have the Ghostbusters company and car, Parma-based Balloonatics doing balloon art and Parma face painter Art by Ali. There’s so much there for everyone.”

The idea behind hosting a Trunk or Treat came out of another successful Young Professionals of Parma event -- the Parma Pizza Bake Off.

“I saw how great of an event it was,” Parson said. “It really advertised our restaurants and venues. People didn’t know they’re going to get good pizza in Parma, but now they know. So I was like we need to have more of an opportunity to recognize who and what Parma is and what it brings to Northeast Ohio.”

The expectation is that Trunk or Treat will not only draw in more than 300 people, but that it will become an annual affair.

“It’s a win-win, especially for children who have so many more opportunities in Parma to sport their Halloween costumes and collect candy,” Mayor Tim DeGeeter said.
