Gov. Tom Wolf, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Attorney General Joshua Shapiro have endorsed Democratic candidate Wanda Williams for Harrisburg mayor, Williams’ campaign announced.
Williams won the primary election to secure the Democratic nomination, but is being challenged by a write-in campaign being waged by incumbent Mayor Eric Papenfuse. The Republican nominee is Timothy Rowbottom.
Wolf urged Harrisburg voters to support Williams next Tuesday, citing the need for collaboration between city and state leaders. “I have valued Wanda’s leadership as President of Harrisburg City Council, and I look forward to continuing to work with her as mayor,” he said.
Wolf told PennLive he chose to give Williams his endorsement instead of the incumbent mayor because “she won the Democratic primary. She is the choice of the voters. I’m going along with the voters of Harrisburg.”
“Wanda Williams has dedicated her adult life to serving her community here in Harrisburg. Known for her integrity and fiscal responsibility, she will fight for affordable housing, improved infrastructure, and opportunities for working Pennsylvanians,” said Casey.
“From fighting to expand affordable housing and revitalizing the city’s infrastructure to responsibly managing its budget, Wanda has the experience and vision to get things done as mayor – and I’m proud to support her,” said Shapiro.
Williams said the endorsements represent “a spirit of collaboration with our Commonwealth’s highest elected officials” that would benefit city residents.
