Yankees’ Joey Gallo claps back at report of ‘quirky’ pregame ritual

New York Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo led the majors with 213 strikeouts this season.

Well, this is an interesting development.

On Sunday, NJ Advance Media’s Bob Klapisch wrote about how the New York Yankees should hire former ace and current YES Network analyst David Cone to provide a spark in the clubhouse.

In his column, Klapisch explained how manager Aaron Boone can’t be completely blamed for the Yankees’ failures in 2021, and that some of the responsibility should be carried by general manager Brian Cashman for how he constructed the roster.

In making his case, Klapisch pointed to one of the pieces which didn’t fit the puzzle:

Take, for instance, Joey Gallo, who I’m told would lay out his uniform piece by piece in front of his locker before dressing, then undress if the fit wasn’t right. Sometimes this would happen more than once before the slugger was ready to take the field.

Obviously, Gallo is a quirky guy. And everyone is entitled to their rituals. But couple these habits with a .160 average as a Yankee with nearly a 50% strikeout ratio in the only pennant race of his career. One scout asked me rhetorically, “does anyone do background checks over there (with the Yankees)?” The implication, of course, is that Gallo wasn’t – and isn’t – a match for this market.

On Monday, Gallo responded to the article with the following tweet:

Me: Literally gets dressed.

Media: Yup that’s why he sucks.

While you can’t blame Gallo for reacting to the column, the 27-year-old has bigger problems to worry about this winter after leading the majors with 213 strikeouts this season.
