The quality of life achievable on a $100,000 annual salary varies significantly depending on the state and city of residence. But locally, a Philadelphia salary at that level goes far, writes Ashley Garrett for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Garrett cites research from GoBankingRates.com to determine the local reach of a six-figure yearly earning. , Philadelphia provides its residents with more bang for their buck than most of the 50 largest cities in the United States.

After all necessary expenses are subtracted, the report indicates Philadelphians are left with $37,000 in their pockets.

These expenses include:

• $17,262.50 in federal income taxes
• $15,036 in annual rent
• $5,098 in annual groceries
• $1,747.32 in annual utilities
• $9,171 in annual driving costs
• $7,805 in annual healthcare

That leftover amount places the City of Brotherly Love in the upper third of the nation’s 50 largest cities. This high placement is driven primarily by low driving costs and below-average rents.

However, not everything is as rosy.

The report estimates that Philadelphia’s median income is just over $40,000. This means that while residents who are making six figures are finding life relatively comfortable, living comfortably, that salary is not a reality for most.
