U.S. News and World Report today released its 2022 “Best Global Universities” rankings, and nine Pennsylvania schools made the cut.

The rankings have been assembled the last eight years in an effort to show that students wanting and willing to travel to get an education have a wide variety of options, similar in quality to the schools back home.

But U.S. News and World Report says that students who are seriously considering a school out of the U.S. “should consider whether the school is in a location where they can imagine themselves feeling happy without the nearby support of close family and friends.”

The list encompasses 1,750 top institutions from more than 90 countries. The total number was up from nearly 1,500 universities last year.

The University of Pennsylvania, based in Philadelphia, was the highest-ranking of all Pa. schools, coming in at number 13 globally, according to the rankings. This puts the university among fellow Ivy League schools, with Yale at 12 and a few spots ahead of Princeton.

The next Pa. school in the rankings is the University of Pittsburgh, coming in at 46, followed by Penn State University at number 80.

After the first 100 global universities, Carnegie Mellon University makes the list at 102. After that, Temple University is down the list at 303. Drexel University is at 354, Lehigh University at 890, and Villanova University at 1,011.

Duquesne University rounds out the Pa. schools on the list at 1,659.

U.S. News does have a national ranking list for just United States schools but says the global list is based on slightly different criteria. While the national lists focus on students and school-specific data, such as graduation rates, retention rates, class sizes and financial resources, the global list seeks to look at an academic institution’s research output and overall reputation.

In the end, the U.S. came out on top with the most top schools in the world, finishing with 271 institutions. China came in second with 253, and Japan was third with 93.
