Driver leaves scene after crash kills passenger in vehicle

AKRON, Ohio — A 23-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in South Akron, and police say the driver left the scene afterward.

Police say officers pulled over a BMW for a traffic violation at Cole Avenue and Marcy Street just after midnight. As officers approached the car, it sped off. The officers tried to pursue the BMW but quickly lost sight of it, police say.

The BMW crashed just minutes later on the 1200 block of Andrus Street, according to police. The vehicle was traveling at high speeds north on Andrus when it first struck a construction dumpster, then hit an unoccupied Volkswagen Jetta parked on the side of the street.

The victim, a passenger in the Jetta whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. The driver had left the scene before police arrived.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident, but speed was a factor. The accident remains under investigation.
