A man shot by Rialto police Friday remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday, Oct. 25, authorities said.

Christian Valadez, 23, of Fontana was shot shortly after midnight in the 100 Block of N. Encina Avenue by a Rialto police officer during an attempted arrest after a traffic stop in which Valadez fled on foot, police said. After fleeing, Valadez returned to his truck, started it while struggling with an officer before breaking free and then attempted to strike the officers with the truck, prompting the shooting, according to the Police Department.

After Valadez was struck by gunfire, he continued driving over a chain link fence and crashed into a house, police said. No one was injured inside the home, but the house was damaged, the Police Department said.

Officers rendered medical aid to Valadez and he was transported to a hospital, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident, police said.

Police initially reported that Valadez died from his injuries at the hospital, but later clarified he was still alive.
