‘The Witcher’ Season 2 Release Date, News, Cast, and More!

For both gamers and book fans alike, the Netflix series The Witcher has been a smashing success. The adaptation of the books turned video games turned streaming series gives gamers a chance to experience the story in a new format. Not to mention, the fans of the books to see the story come to life. The Witcher Season 2 is where the story set up by Season 1 truly begins.

We’ve got the latest updates on the plot, the cast, and the release date, so get ready to return to the Continent and watch Geralt of Rivia make his next moves!

The Plot and Source Material

The Witcher is an adaptation of the original books by author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series was first adapted into a video game franchise by CD Projekt Red. Following its popularity in that format, Netflix decided to cash in on that success by creating a television series. 

The first series was not based on the first book, but on a collection of short stories called The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. Instead of returning to their pasts in a flashback, we get to see the origin stories of our three protagonists, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer, happen concurrently.

We watch their fates collide at the end of the season as their paths cross, their bonds formed by destiny. Season 1 was really just the beginning of the story. 

Season 2 is where we get into the meat of the plot set forth in the original novels. If you’re interested in reading the source material, here is the order in which the first five were published:

• Blood of Elves
• Time of Contempt
• Baptism of Fire
• The Tower of the Swallow 
• The Lady of the Lake 

We’ll watch as Geralt of Rivia brings Ciri, his child of surprise, to Kaer Morhen, the infamous locale where he himself partook in training to hunt monsters. 

The Witcher Season 2 Release Date

For those waiting impatiently for Season 2 to begin, the season premieres on Netflix on December 17, 2021. Season 1 was released all at once, so fans could binge all 8 episodes without stopping. Thankfully, Season 2 will be released in the same way, with all 8 episodes being released on the premiere date.

Netflix released this statement as a teaser on what we can expect from The Witcher Season 2 in terms of plot: “Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans, and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.”

The Witcher Season 2 Cast

When it comes to any show’s second season, one of the most important questions to ask is which cast members will return to fulfill their roles from Season 1?

Henry Cavill will return as the titular character. Can there really be a series called “The Witcher” without the Witcher himself? Freya Allan will continue to play Ciri. And Yennefer, Geralt’s true love, will be played again by Anya Chalotra. How she will return is the true question; Geralt still believes her dead after her involvement in the Battle of Sodden Hill. 

Joey Batey will once again bring a song to our hearts as Jaskier, the series’s bard. It remains to be seen if his repertoire will include a hit as catchy as “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher.”

MyAnna Buring will return as Tissaia, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Therica Wilson Read as Sabrina, and Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz. The end of Season 1 offered them no mercy, so we’ll be interested to see how they recover and regroup.

The Brotherhood of Sorcerers will fill its ranks with Artorius Vigo, played by Terence Maynard, Lars Mikkelson as Stregobor, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla Vigo, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, and Lilly Cooper as Murta.

Tom Canton is returning to play the elvish Filavandrel and Wilson Radjou-Pujalte will play the elvish Dara. Eamon Farren continues to play Cahir, and Jeremy Crawford will fill his role as the dwarven Yarpin Zigrin.

New Faces

As we dive into the meat of the story with The Witcher Season 2, the series will introduce new characters to the fold. 

Fans of Bridgerton will be excited to hear that Lady Danbury is joining the Continent. Adjourn Andoh will play chief priestess Nenneke. Bridgerton’s Chris Fulton will play Rience, a mage, a distinct role from his previous Phillip Crane on Bridgerton.

Cassie Clare from Brave New World will play Philippa Eilhart, a woman who leads the Lodge of Sorceresses. Graham McTavish from Outlander will play Dijkstra, and Liz Carr and Simon Callow will work together as Fenn and Codringher, a pair of lawyers.

Reportedly, there’s a new character joining the Witcher lore. Kevin Doyle from Downton Abbey will fill the role of Ba’lian, but the name might be an alias for a character that already exists in the books. 

If you watch The Witcher because you’re sad Game of Thrones ended, you’re in luck. Kristofer Hivju joins the ranks as Nivellen. His role as a cursed man was revealed during Netflix’s Tudum event in September 2021.

Cavill did speak briefly recently about new cast member Kim Bodnia, who plays Geralt’s fellow Witcher. “Kim and I were discussing the emotionality of these characters, and Kim brings some powerful emotion to [the role] and a real sense of soul and heart and connection to the wild and connection to nature,” Cavill explained. “It’s beautiful to watch and beautiful to be a part of. Some of my favorite scenes I got to perform with Kim. He does bring something really special to the character, and I think people are really going to enjoy it.”

December cannot come fast enough for those of us excited about the return of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher Season 2. Season 1 set us up with such rich origin stories that it will be exciting to see how all the characters interact now that we know so much about them.
