Biden jokes to schoolchildren about dodging press questions

President Joe Biden schooled a classroom of children about his job, including a quip about sidestepping press questions.

Biden made the comment during a tour of East End Elementary School in North Plainfield, New Jersey, a stop planned to promote a prekindergarten program expected to be included in his roughly $2 trillion social welfare and climate spending package.

“See all these people here?” Biden asked the children, pointing to traveling reporters and TV crews. “They’re with you all the time. They get to ask you all kinds of questions, and you try to figure out how you can avoid answering them sometimes.”

Biden also made an odd reference to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, whose reelection campaign the president flew to the state to support.

“You see this man, here? He’s the governor of this state. He runs the state. And this is his wife, who runs him and me and everybody else,” Biden told the children.

New Jersey voters have until Nov. 2 to cast their ballots, and Democrats are hoping Congress passing Biden’s $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal and lawmakers agreeing on the broader spending package will help Murphy’s chances.

Biden’s press joke is ill-timed as the White House grapples with growing pressure to make the president more available to the media, including requests to hold another stand-alone news conference.

“He takes questions all the time,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said last week. “This is a large White House press corps. But he does take questions.”
