Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston are among the longtime “Friends” actors who shared sweet messages about co-star James Michael Tyler following his death.
Tyler, who played the Central Perk employee Gunther on the Manhattan-set sitcom, died at age 59 following a battle with stage 4 prostate cancer.
“James, thank you for playing such a wonderful, unforgettable role in Friends and for being such a big hearted gentleman and all around mensch off screen,” Schwimmer wrote in an Instagram tribute Sunday. “You will be missed, buddy.”
Tyler’s character was in love with Rachel Green, portrayed by Aniston, who shared a video from the show in her tribute.
“Whenever I’m in a cafe having coffee, or see a man with hair brighter than the sun, I’ll think of you,” Aniston captioned the Instagram clip.
Tyler appeared on 150 episodes of “Friends,” which aired from 1994 to 2004.
“We had a lot of laughs buddy. You will be missed. RIP my friend,” Matt LeBlanc wrote on Instagram, along with a photo showing their “Friends” characters together.
Lisa Kudrow thanked Tyler for “being there for us all,” while Cox wrote, “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you.”
Tyler revealed on a June episode of NBC’s “Today” show that he was diagnosed in 2018 with an “advanced” case of cancer.
“I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing,” Tyler said at the time. “So the cancer decided to mutate at the time of the (COVID-19) pandemic, and so it’s progressed.”
