Jordan Henderson Calls 5-0 Victory Over Man United a “Big Step Forward”

On the list of what would make for a good footballing day for Liverpool players, coaches, and fans, it would be rather hard to top going to Old Trafford and defeating Manchester United, your biggest rivals, by a lopsided five goals to nil scoreline.

On Sunday, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds did just that, reaffirming their title credentials and relegating their historic rivals to also-rans in the 2021-22 Premier League race. And after the match, captain Jordan Henderson reacted to the historic hammering.

“It was a good day,” Henderson noted. “Old Trafford is a tough place to come. So, overall I thought it was a fantastic day. A great performance from start to finish. A clean sheet, which is really important for us. And obviously some amazing goals.

“So, a really pleasing day and a big step forward. [We wanted] to play our football and play with intensity and try to get the ball forward early, which I thought we did very well, and then we were clinical in front of goal, which makes the difference.”

For United, there are now questions and uncertainty to go with the embarrassment of one of the worst results in the club’s history, but for the time being at least it appears manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be given the next three games to save his job.

For the Reds, attention turns to Preston North End in the League Cup, Brighton in the league, and then their second group stage match against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and a chance to secure advancement to the knockout rounds.

And the goal will be to continue to play well, to continue to score goals, and perhaps most importantly to continue to limit their opponents, with Henderson pointing to the clean sheet against United as perhaps the most satisfying part of the result.

“I’m delighted in terms of a clean sheet,” Henderson added. “To concede two in midweek we were disappointed, so we knew today we wanted to try to keep a clean sheet. I thought that was big today for us and we need to keep that going.”
