Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale sets his sights on ousting Jordan Pickford for the England No 1 shirt for the Qatar World Cup as he reveals Euro 2020 was 'the best weeks of my life' 

• Aaron Ramsdale was a late call up to Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad
• The 23-year-old was recalled for World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Hungary
• But despite being in the squad, Ramsdale has yet to earn an international cap 
• The goalkeeper faces competition from Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope 

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has set his sights on the England No 1 shirt for the 2022 World Cup. 

Ramsdale was a late call up to Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad after Dean Henderson had to withdraw due to injury. 

The 23-year-old was recalled for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary earlier this month but has yet to earn an international cap. 

But the goalkeeper believes he can oust England's No 1 Jordan Pickford from between the posts following his impressive displays for the Gunners after his summer switch from Sheffield United. 

Ramsdale's late summer call-up gave him a timely boost after a rough patch that saw him eliminated with England at the U21 Euros and relegation with Sheffield. 

Speaking on the whirlwind summer, the former AFC Wimbledon loanee told the League One club's website: 'Me and the Mrs were going to go on holiday and go and chill. The next thing you know, I'm in the squad, I'm fully part of it and it was some of the best weeks of my life!'

The Three Lions made it all the way to the Euros final at Wembley but suffered defeat to Italy on penalties. 

But, despite not making an appearance in the campaign, Ramsdale still enjoyed the experience and hopes they can replicate it in Qatar - this time with him starting in goal. 

'I keep saying it was a great lad's holiday,' he added. 'That's just the team spirit we had, and we were just a few kicks away from achieving something great.

'It's just added momentum and hunger to do well in the World Cup and hopefully I can be a part of that again and hopefully that'll be to do with a starting role.'

Ramsdale has started Arsenal’s last six Premier League matches after replacing Bernd Leno following Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing at Manchester City and his shot-stopping displays have helped Mikel Arteta's team find their momentum after a dreadful start to the term.

But despite impressing domestically, the keeper faces a tough challenge to break onto the international stage.  

Pickford is the man in his way and the Everton goalkeeper is Southgate's clear favourite with the Three Lions boss sticking by him, despite a drop in form for the Toffees. 

While Burnley's Nick Pope will also be looking to compete with Ramsdale and Pickford and already has seven caps to his name.
