Was Iowa State Victim of Worst Penalty in NCAA History? [WATCH]

Iowa State had a huge win over #8, and previously unbeaten, Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon in Ames. However, Iowa State had to overcome one of the worst calls I've ever seen to win it.

It was early in the 3rd quarter at Jack Trice Stadium, with Iowa State down a touchdown to the Cowboys. That's when Cyclone quarterback Brock Purdy hit wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson for what appeared to be a touchdown that would put Iowa State within an extra point of tying the game. The touchdown didn't count, though.

Hutchinson was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Since he hadn't reached the end zone when the penalty was whistled, the touchdown didn't count. A spot foul, called at the 3-yard line, it brought the ball back to the 18. The video is below, synced up with the audio from the Cyclone Radio Network. Play-by-play man John Walters says, "Oh, come on! That is horrible!" Color analyst Eric Heft went a step further, calling it "like the worst call in NCAA history."

Iowa State would overcome the penalty by scoring a touchdown on the drive, and would eventually win the game 24-21. After the game, fans stormed the field. It was the second time in three weeks it's happened in the state of Iowa.

You may remember a few weeks ago that Iowa was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct after tight end Sam LaPorta scored a touchdown against Colorado State. LaPorta spun the ball in the end zone after scoring, then continued on his way. Because it was after the touchdown was scored, the penalty was enforced on the ensuing kickoff.

During the press conference following the Colorado State game, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said,

Apparently, you can't spin the ball. I learned that today. I knew taunting was a big thing, but you can't spin it, either. It didn't seem like an excessive celebration to me, but I just -- seemed like taunting was a bigger thing was the message I heard, but taunting and spinning, I'll add that to the list.

Sam LaPorta also spoke about it.

I'm all for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that go above and beyond on excessive celebration. Ones that might result in an immediate altercation if another player is close by and the celebration is "in their face." The two above? Come on.
