Impact of staffing shortages on O’Baby’s restaurant

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Right now, restaurants are one of the many industries experiencing staffing shortages, and businesses like O’Baby’s here in New Hartford are struggling to keep their doors open.

“It’s been a bumpy road especially lately for example Saturday we had to shut our doors because we did not have enough staff to operate fully,” said Laura Conley.

Owner and Operator of the Sandwich Shoppe Laura Conley explains that one of the factors in this staffing shortage is money.

“Me being a very progressive individual I think you know people want to be paid more money they want to be paid what they think they deserve and I couldn’t agree more,” said Conley.

Conley says that throughout her 9 years running O’Baby’s, and seeing how a restaurant operates growing up at her dad’s sandwich shop, a shortage like this has never happened.

“My dad owned a pizzeria and a sandwich shop growing up and in my almost thirty years on this planet I have never seen anything like this and like I said I know that its not just us but it makes it really scary for small businesses to plan their future,” said Conley.

Overall, Conley says that their staff is like a family, which makes it difficult as they try to combat the hardships that come along with the shortage.

“Its scary to know that I wont be able to have something for them or even for myself and my family we really are just riding this wave day to day at this point,” said Conley
