Hartford HealthCare has purchased the 38,605-square-foot Immaculata Retreat House in Willimantic for $2.8 million and will use the facility as a treatment center for individuals with substance use disorders.

HHC purchased the 38.1-acre property - located at 289 Windham Rd. - on June 16 from Oblate Real Estate Trust, the previous owners, according to property records.

HHC said the timeline for opening the center will be the spring or early summer of 2022.

Pat Rehmer, president of Hartford HealthCare Behavioral Health Network, said HHC is committed to helping those suffering from substance abuse.

“Given the continued epidemic with substance abuse in Connecticut, the Behavioral Health Network is committed to being part of the solution,” Rehmer said in a statement. “As the largest provider of mental health in the state, the Behavioral Health Network is proud to invest in a center that will offer a new option for people to begin their journeys of recovery. We know that substance abuse doesn’t discriminate - affecting the business community as much as any other. There is hope and we remind you, don’t give up on your recovery journey.”

HHC representatives said they plan on investing more money to improve the 63-year-old building, but said it’s too early to say how much will be invested.

According to the state Department of Public Health, the use of illicit drugs and prescription opioids were the main cause of drug overdose deaths in the state, resulting in 7,695 deaths from 2012 to 2020. In addition, DPH reports that overdose deaths increased 14.3% in 2020 as compared to 2019.

In total, HHC owns and or leases 442 properties.
