Giants edge back-and-forth game in shootout

Belfast are into the Quarter-Finals of the Premier Sports Challenge Cup as winners of Group A thanks to a shootout win over the Dundee Stars on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants had the perfect start on their return to home ice with a goal inside the opening three minutes – Tyler Soy rewarded in at the net with the opening goal after 2:45. Dundee though hit back immediately through a stretch pass from Sebastian Bengtsson converted by Gabriel Desjardins through Jackson Whistle.

However, Belfast were back ahead through David Goodwin at 4:13 in a busy opening spell for both netminders, although that proved to be the final goal of the opening period.

After a goalless middle period, the third sprang into life after just 27 seconds when Corror sills wristed home from the circle to tie the game at two each. Dundee couldn’t stay level for very long though and were behind for a third time when Scott Conway struck exactly three minutes later to put the Giants back ahead.

Such was the back and forth nature of the game that it was little surprise when Dundee equalised not long after! Charlie Combs found Desjardins alone in the slot and he hammered home the one-timer for his second of the game with 46:29 played.

No more goals following in regulation time, nor overtime where the Giants were unable to convert a full two-minute powerplay as they piled pressure on Adam Morrison’s net.

The game was decided in a shootout where both goalies shone – Scott Conway with the lone goal in round three proved decisive and earned the Giants the extra point.
