U.S. Sen. Manchin, D-W.Va., and his position on President Joe Biden's Build Back Better plan was on the front of many West Virginians minds Sunday.
Many were in high spirits outside the state Capitol rallying to urge Manchin to sign the infrastructure bill.
Kaylen Barker with the West Virginia Poor People's Campaign said she feels Manchin is neglecting the Mountain State.
"Our roads and bridges are crumbling," Barker said. "People don’t have a living wage. People don’t have access to health care. People don’t have access to child care.”
Members of the Poor People's Campaign detailed six points from the infrastructure bill that they think would benefit West Virginians.
"I’m hoping that Manchin will get on board," Barker said. "I know that he wants to cut it back because he said that it’ll give us a sense of entitlement. It’s not a sense of entitlement to want better than crumbling roads and bridges. It’s not a sense of entitlement to want to be able to work and care for your family.”
Barker said improving infrastructure would be an investment in West Virginia's future.
"We want to be able to provide better for our children than what we had," Barker said. "And I think that’s something that he’s missing out is the human element to this. It’s not about numbers. It’s about what is it going to cost if we don’t do this? And lives and in hurt.”
