House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not divulge on Sunday whether she plans to run for reelection.
Pelosi, 81, is currently in her 18th term and serving her second stint as speaker of the House. But Democrats hold a slim majority in the lower chamber, and the Republicans are eager to win back control in 2022.
CNN’s Jake Tapper asked the California Democrat about the prospect of running again at the tail end of an interview on State of the Union.
“Why would I tell you that now?” Pelosi said after laughing through Tapper’s first line of inquiries and joking she would have to be on air “many more times” before making such an announcement.

Pressed further, Pelosi said, “Well, probably I would have that conversation with my family first, if you don’t mind.”
Pelosi represents California’s 12th Congressional District, which comprises a part of San Francisco County. She has served in Congress since 1987. House representatives are elected to two-year terms, and Pelosi is up for reelection in 2022.
Democrats also have a tenuous grip on the Senate and hold the White House.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican serving as minority leader, is viewed as being the favorite to be voted speaker by the House if the GOP wins control of the lower chamber next year.

With some Democrats already announcing plans to retire, McCarthy recently predicted more will follow, and it improves the prospects for his party in the 2022 midterm elections.
“Once you get past Thanksgiving and members go home, and they’re Democrats, and they’ve been challenged before, and they’re going to get beat up, Congress is not that great,” he told Fox News.
