How is Zach Wilson spending the Jets' bye week?

Zach Wilson is taking the Jets’ bye week to cleanse himself of New York and get back to the basics.

Gang Green’s rookie signal-caller said Tuesday that he will return home to Utah during the four-day break. Doing so will allow him to reconnect with his family and work with former NFL quarterback John Beck, his long-time personal coach.

“I’m going to go watch the first five games of this season, see what things I really want to put an emphasis on and how I can just clear my mind,” Wilson said. “I’ll spend a little time with the family and then be ready to come back and get after it this next week.”

Hitting the reset button might not be a bad idea for Wilson. The 22-year-old is off to a rocky start with the Jets, going 1-4 with 1,117 passing yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions in his first five NFL starts. Wilson has shown flashes of the potential that made him the No. 2 pick in last year’s draft, but he has struggled with consistency and turnovers.

Wilson shined in New York’s lone win of the season — an overtime thriller against the Titans in Week 4 — with 297 yards and two touchdowns. His trip to London the following weekend was not a fruitful one, though, as he struggled against the Falcons in a 27-20 loss.

“I don’t want to feel like I have to make an excuse for myself of why I’m not getting the job done,” Wilson said. “I understand that and I understand it’s a process and having perspective, but I have also a high expectation for myself and my ability to make plays.”

The Jets are hoping a recharged Wilson returns to Florham Park after the bye week. Nobody inside of One Jets Drive is losing faith in Wilson despite his early struggles, which will only aid his quest for consistency and cleaner play as his rookie season progresses. Thanks to the bye week, he’ll tackle that challenge with a clearer mind.
