Sheffield United hold off a late comeback from Barnsley to secure a 3-2 win at Oakwell through a Lys Mousset brace and strike from Ben Osborn

Markus Schopp is on the brink at Barnsley after this latest horror show left furious fans calling for his head.

The 47-year-old Austrian was appointed in the summer after Valerien Ismael jumped ship for West Brom but his reign has proved disastrous.

Barnsley have won only once all season and defeat here marked a sixth straight loss – extending the Tykes’ winless run to 12 games and leaving them second bottom.

And so a team who finished fifth last season are staring at the dismal prospect of a relegation dogfight and unseating their manager before Halloween.

Certainly much of this performance will give Barnsley’s owners nightmares, even if two late goals from Schopp’s side encouraged hopes of a famous comeback which never materialised.

A lunchtime Yorkshire derby against big-city rivals Sheffield United should have stirred the blood of Schopp’s players.

But it was all too easy for the Blades, who awoke from their own slumber after an awful first half to pick Barnsley off with two goals in three minutes shortly after the interval.

Frenchman Lys Mousset was United’s two-goal hero, rising above the mediocrity around him by firing in a brilliant 51st–minute opener from 20 yards.

The raucous celebrations behind Barnsley goalkeeper Brad Collins’ goal net had barely subsided when United and Mousset struck again this time tapping home Ben Osborn’s cross from six yards.

Schopp’s men created precious little and after Cole fired wide from six yards, the angry home faithful sang ‘you couldn’t score in a brothel’.

It said much for the plight of a club who appear to be sleepwalking towards relegation.

Barnsley fashioned a reply which saw Cole and fellow substitute Aaron Leya Iseka cut United’s lead – but they never genuinely threatened an equaliser.

Schopp surely cannot survive this – the Barnsley fans called repeatedly for his removal and the onus is on the board to act quickly.

There was talk beforehand among some locals that Barnsley were too good to go down.

On this evidence, they are too bad to stay up.

This wasn't a performance - it was a suicide note, and against a United side who have hardly set the Championship alight this season.

After Mousset had taken centre stage, Osborn had all the time in the world to pick his spot in the bottom corner after collecting George Baldock’s cross in the 72nd minute.

From Barnsley there was no invention, no confidence - in a nutshell, no hope.

This was as bad as it gets.

Yet they roused themselves to score twice in the last 13 minutes to leave the huge army of travelling supporters with frayed nerves.

First, that man Cole produced a clinical left-foot shot which flew past Robin Olsen in the 78th minute.

Four minutes later, Leya Iseka manoeuvred his way through some flimsy United defending to blast home a second and make it 3-2.

But it was too little too late and it would be a major surprise if Schopp is still in position when Barnsley travel to Bristol City on Saturday.
