It’s no secret that Morgan Wallen has had arguably the biggest year in all of music.
It’s also no secret that he’s had one of the most controversial.
His album Dangerous: The Double Album is still the highest selling album of the year, in any genre, it spent 10 straight weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart, a first for any country music album, and put him in elite company with fellow country music artists… only Garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus and Taylor Swift have spent more weeks atop the chart in total.
So yeah, on any given year, that kind of commercial success would probably easily punch your ticket to a Grammy nomination, but this is not any other year.
Morgan’s racial slur incident got him banned from the ACM Awards and banned from the CMA Awards next month, however for the CMAs, he was allowed to be nominated in categories that credit the other people involved such as Album of the Year, Song of the Year, etc…
He secured a nomination for Album of the Year.
According to Billboard, Big Loud, Wallen’s label, has confirmed that Wallen was submitted in eight categories, including the all-genre Album of the Year, as well as Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his previous single “7 Summers.” He also was submitted in four more country music categories.
The question remains… will the Grammys allow him?
The Grammys have made a ruling on Morgan’s eligibility regarding the Best New Artist category and they’ve declined to deem him eligible. Perhaps his previous success with a few #1 singles was the reason, or perhaps this is a sign of things to come…
We’ll find out on November 23rd.
In the meantime, Morgan recently debuted a new song titled “Don’t Think Jesus,” written by by Jessi Alexander, Chase McGill and Mark Holman.
