Authorities in Charlton say a woman ran from the scene of a crash with a child and hid underneath a deck until police discovered them.

Charlton police said officers responded to a two-car crash on Route 20 near the Brookfield Road intersection around 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

“As officers arrived, they were told by witnesses that a female operator of one of the involved vehicles had left the area with a 2-year-old child in an unknown direction,” police said.

Officers checked the area and the local hospital to try to find the driver but were unable to locate her and the child.

Officer Derek Gaylord and his K-9 Dozer were brought to the scene to check the area around the crash.

The police dog followed a trail through a yard on Brookfield Road. A child’s coat and a bag with baby items were discovered by police.

Dozer then took the officer to the back of a house on Brookfield Road.

“The area was illuminated, and the involved female and child were found hiding underneath the deck of a house,” police said. “An ambulance was called to evaluate both parties.”

Police said the driver will be charged. The woman was not publicly named by police.
