Watching Netflix’s Locke & Key Season 2 and confused about why new Matheson history teacher Josh Bennett looks so familiar — particularly when paired with his romantic interest, Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield)? That’s because Brendan Hines, the actor who plays Josh, was actually featured on Stanchfield’s previous hit series, Scandal, way back in Season 1.

“When we first started working together, I was like, ‘Do you remember, I rolled you up in a rug from Scandal? I cleaned up your dead body?'” Stanchfield recalled to Decider, laughing.

In Scandal‘s premiere season, Hines played Gideon Wallace, a small time reporter looking to expose the central cover-up for the initial episodes, one that could potentially have brought down the President. Over the course of the season, he struck up a romantic relationship with Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes), a member of Olivia Pope & Associates.

Ultimately, that proved to be Gideon’s downfall, as he was murdered in Quinn’s apartment by the psychotic Billy Chambers (Matt Letscher). And as mentioned, after bleeding out on Quinn’s floor, Olivia Pope recruited her team — including Stanchfield’s Abby Wheelan — to clean up the mess and get rid of the body.

Things go a little differently on Locke & Key, and spoilers past this point, as Josh and Nina date for a while, before they ultimately break up when he becomes too obsessed with the Black Door, a portal to a demon dimension located in the sea caves below Nina’s house. Classic dude behavior: more interested in demon portals, than the girl right in front of them, smdh.

And if Scandal wasn’t your jam, but you still know Hines from somewhere, it might be from one of the other roles in his prolific career, from his regular role as Eli Loker on Lie to Me, to recurring roles on Betrayal, Suits and Amazon’s The Tick, among many others.

That all said, even if things don’t end well for Nina and Josh, Stanchfield still had a lovely time working with Hines again.

“It was great,” Stanchfield continued. “Brendan Hines is a great actor. I really, really enjoy working with him. He’s smart and funny and he makes me laugh, so we had a blast doing that storyline together. It’s always fun to work with people that you’ve worked with before, so it was nice.”

Locke & Key Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
