Nearly 100 guns bought back by police during Columbus event

COLUMBUS — Nearly 100 guns were bought back by Columbus Police during a gun buyback event on Saturday.

According to our news partners at WBNS, police received 73 handguns, 11 shotguns and 13 rifles.

“My dad was killed, my uncle paralyzed, friends are dead. Being so wrapped up in gun violence so much, I started using guns,” Dunbar said.

Dwayne Dunbar, with the organization “International to International,” spoke to WBNS about his history with gun violence.

He told the station that taking nearly 100 guns off the street “probably saved 100 lives” yesterday.

This was CPD’s first gun buyback event.

Anyone who brought in a gun received a gift card and their identity was kept anonymous.

Any guns bought back that are reported stolen will be returned to their rightful owners. Additionally, if any gun is revealed to be linked to a crime, detectives will take them and investigate.
