• The Boston Bruins welcome the San Jose Sharks to the TD Garden this afternoon for the first meeting between the two since 2019. The two teams last faced each other nearly two years ago on October 29, 2019 in Boston when the Bruins topped the Sharks 5-1 in the shortened 2019-20 season. There are still familiar faces on both sides that contributed on the ice for both sides, with Charlie Coyle, Brad Marchand and Brandon Carlo picking up goals. For the Sharks, Brent Burns had scored with Karlsson and Tomas Hertl adding the assists.
• The Bruins return home after a split two-game road trip. The Bruins fell to the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-3, on Wednesday, but bounced back Friday as to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 4-1. The Bruins added tallies from David Pastrnak and Tomas Nosek - his first as a Bruin- in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Coyle netted a power-play goal off a feed from Marchand to make the score 3-0. Victor Olofsson cut into the Bruins’ lead with a five-hole goal late in the third period to put the Sabres on the board. Taylor Hall potted an empty-netter to make the final 4-1 for the Bruins.
• This will be the Sharks’ fourth game in a five-game road trip. San Jose comes to Boston undefeated on a four-game winning streak. They’ve scored four or more goals in those four games. The Sharks last played on October 22 in Toronto where they beat the Maple Leafs, 5-3.
• Couture, Meier and Karlsson are all on a four-game point streak for San Jose. All three players have each also registered one three-point night so far this season.
• For the Bruins, Marchand and Pastrnak are on a three-game point streak. Marchand has two multi-point nights in these three games, registering a total of three goals and two assists for five points. Pastrnak has registered a point in each game for a total of one goal and two assists.
• Linus Ullmark will get his second start in net. Although he had a rough preseason, Ullmark had a strong first showing against the Sabres and earned his second consecutive start. In Friday’s win, he recorded 35 saves for a .972 save percentage. He faced 15 shots in the first period and staved off 32 shots before the Sabres broke through with 5:25 minutes left in the third period.
• Injury updates: Anton Blidh subbed in for Nick Foligno last game, but left with an upper-body injury of his own. Both were re-evaluated yesterday and ruled out for today’s game. Craig Smith’s status is also questionable, as Bruce Cassidy said he was “dealing with a nagging injury” in Buffalo. Cassidy said Jack Studnicka would likely get the call-up.
