Phoebe Bacon Wins Three as Wisconsin Dominates Arizona and Hawaii in Tucson Tri-Meet

Phoebe Bacon Wins as Three Wisconsin Dominates Arizona and Hawaii in Tucson Tri-Meet

The University of Wisconsin and University of Hawaii swim teams both traveled to Tucson, Arizona, this weekend for a two-day affair against the Wildcats, and the Badgers were the dominant team. Wisconsin’s women, led by U.S. Olympian and reigning 200 backstroke NCAA champion Phoebe Bacon, crushed both teams. Wisconsin’s women beat Arizona 221-93 and Hawaii 243-71. Wisconsin’s men won 195-119 over Arizona and 252-62 over Hawaii. Arizona’s women beat Hawaii 210.5-103.5, and the men won 220-95.

Over the course of the meet, Bacon swept victories in the 200 back (1:57.19), 200 IM (2:01.39) and 100 back (54.00), and she placed second in the 200 free (1:50.01). Bacon’s Badger teammate Paige McKenna won the 1000 free (9:59.08) and 500 free (4:52.00).

Arizona won the meet-opening 400 medley relay, but the remainign relays all went to the Badgers (200 and 400 free relays and 200 medley relay). Members of those relays included Bacon, Lillie HosackAlana Palmer, Sophie FiskeMacKenzie McConagha, Katie McClintock and Mallory Jump. Hosack also won the 50 free, Fiske won the 100 free, Jump took the top spot in the 100 fly, and McConagha placed first in the 200 fly.

On the men’s side, the MVP for Wisconsin was Andrew Benson, who was very impressive in winning the 50 free (19.84) and 100 free (43.49). Benson also finished second in the 200 free (1:37.25) and led Wisconsin to wins in the 400 medley relay (with Wes JekelWill Myhre and Ryan Zelen), 200 free relay (with Jacob Newmark, Zelen and Isaac Casey-Hrenak) and 200 free relay (with Benson, Myhre and Zelen). Myhre also won the 100 breast in 53.95.

For Arizona, Brooks Fail was a monster as he recorded four individual wins. Fail, who took third in the 500 free and fourth in the 1650 free at last year’s NCAA championships and was a two-time finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, won the 1000 free (9:03.66), 200 free (1:36.47), 500 free (4:22.97) and 200 free (1:46.41).
