Springfield police investigating online school threat

Springfield Police Department detectives are actively investigating a school threat circulating on social media apparently since Friday evening. Police and city officials have not indicated the specific nature of the threat nor the school or schools to which it referred.

Police Commissioner Cheryl Claprood said in a statement that she wanted school administrators, faculty, students and their parents to know that police are aware of the threat and are actively working to determine the identity of the responsible party or parties.

“We have a successful track record of identifying those making social media threats utilizing various resources to track down those responsible,” she said. “We take every threat seriously and investigate them thoroughly.  In the meantime, we will have heightened police presence at the schools as this investigation continues.”

Mayor Domenic Sarno said he was made aware of the threat Saturday morning and is working in concert with Clapprood and School Superintendent Daniel Warwick.

“We are taking all necessary steps to make sure our students, staff, teachers and administrators will be safe and sound,” he said in a release. “We will show zero tolerance to the individuals or individuals responsible for this crime.”

Anyone with information about this threat or the people responsible is asked to contact the Springfield Police Department Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.  Information can be sent to police anonymously by way of Text A Tip. Simply text “CRIMES” (274637) then type “Solve” followed by the information you wish to send.
