Mason Mount sets goal-scoring intention, delivers first career Chelsea hat-trick

Mason Mount had gone 25 games (club and country combined) without scoring a goal — dating back to his strike against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinal. Turns out, he was just saving them up.

Prior to Saturday’s match against Norwich City, the reigning Chelsea Player of the Year set his intention to get on the scoresheet at long last, and expressed hope that once he did, the “floodgates will open”.

And open they did.

“Before the game, I put pressure on myself to get on the scoresheet, then three came around in the same game. It’s obviously a massive moment for me. I’ll remember this one for a long time.”

“[But] it’s also about the team. We were on it the entire game but we never dropped our standards and kept going.”

Mount got Chelsea’s seven-star party started with a lovely arrowed strike inside of seven minutes, then added the icing and the cherry on top of our dominant cake with our sixth and seventh goals of the day. He needed a bit of luck for the sixth, as the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken after Tim Krul had just barely come off his line to make the initial save. And he needed a great bit of unselfish play for the seventh, as Ruben Loftus-Cheek passed up his own easy chance to gift an even easier tap-in. But goals are goals and Mason got three of them in one go.

“A hat-trick for Mason is huge because it’s huge. He’s very proud and puts a lot of pressure on himself. I feel him a bit lighter and playing with more freedom in the last matches. This is what we need.

“[He] is maybe between an eight and a ten so not a real striker so we depend also heavily on him and that’s why other players play a key role [as well]. It is a complex game. There is very rarely one reason why things happen like this, but we depend on Mason and we want to. We like his style, we like where he comes from, we like his personality, he is a top player and a top guy.”

Mount had scored a hat-trick for Vitesse and also Derby County, and now he’s got one for his beloved Chels as well! He is the 81st player in club history to accomplish this feat, which is the 154th time it has happened for us.
