Montgomery fire officials say a school bus carrying players and coaches from the Cornwall High School varsity football team was involved in an accident Friday night.
Officials say that five people were hurt between both vehicles. It happened around 10 p.m. in Montgomery, according to the interim Montgomery police chief. Two buses had just left Valley Central High School after a game.
While traveling on Route 17K in the area of Route 208, one of the buses was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of that vehicle was taken into custody under the suspicion of driving under the influence.
Two players, a coach, and the bus driver were sent to the hospital, according to Superintendent Terry J. Dade.
The Cornwall Central School District issued a statement, saying in part: “My sincere gratitude goes out to all of the first responders, coaches, and staff members for all of the assistance they provided last night for our students and their families.”
Full statement:
Dear CCSD Community,
Last night on the way home from our football game, one of the two buses carrying players and coaches was struck by another vehicle. Two players, a coach, and the bus driver were sent to the hospital.
The most important information that I can share at this time is that they have each been released from the hospital, and everyone is home safely with their families.
My sincere gratitude goes out to all of the first responders, coaches, and staff members for all of the assistance they provided last night for our students and their families.
Sincerely,
Terry J. Dade
