Celebrating Dwight Yoakam’s 64th Birthday With One Of The Best Looking Album Covers In Country Music

A close-up of a clock

Happy 64th birthday to an absolute legend, Dwight Yoakam.

Dwight was one of the most popular artists of the late ’80s and ’90s, selling more than 30 million records, securing 5 Number 1 albums, a ton of CMA and ACM nominations, and a status among modern country artists as one of the most influential artists of all time.

His biggest project by far was This Time, a 1993 triple platinum album that contained 3 singles that went to Number 2 (“Ain’t That Lonely Yet”, “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere” and “Fast As You”) and 2 others that went Top 25 (“Try Not To Look So Pretty” and “Pocket of a Clown”).

Dwight wrote or co-wrote all but one song and also had one of the coolest looking album covers in history made for the project.

I mean, just look at this beauty.

The album’s biggest song was also his most ambitious release to date, “A Thousand Miles From No Where,” which, while still rooted in country, had instrumentation that made it accessible to pop audiences of the day and pushed the song to a huge audience.

Years ago, Dwight Yoakam was my introduction to ’80s and ’90s country music and to this day I still absolutely love the sound of this and most other Dwight projects.

Crank it up.
