SARAH STANGE SCORES IN SOCCER’S 1-1 DOUBLE OVERTIME DRAW WITH WAYNE STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team played 110 minutes of good soccer on Friday evening, coming away from a chilly night at Malosky Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Wayne State College. This is the team's second tie of the season after a 0-0 draw against Sioux Falls earlier this year.

Both teams would remain scoreless headed into the second half, before Sarah Stange got the lone, unassisted, goal for the Bulldogs at the 59:34 mark of tonight's game. It was Stange's first goal of the season and fourth of her career and came after knocking on the door all game. After the game, Head Coach Greg Cane remarked that "Sarah was probably one of the best players on the field in the last two games, and her quality showed in a highlight goal."

Wayne State would respond in the 71st minute with an unassisted goal of their own after a frenzy in the box to tie the game at one goal apiece, where it would remain through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods.

The Bulldogs had nearly double the shot attempts as compared with the Wildcats, outshooting them 12-4 in the second half alone. The Wildcats would have 14 total shots -- 12 on frame -- compared with the Bulldogs' 25, of which 13 were on frame over the course of the game. Stange led the team with eight shots total and five shots on goal.

The Bulldogs' back line was solid tonight, with most of the group playing all 110 minutes. Abbey Radermacher made her first career start, playing 32 total minutes. Sophia Grenz made 11 saves in tonight's game and played all 110 minutes in net.

UMD finished the game with 58% possession. Said Coach Cane, "It was an open game in the first half--more open than I think both teams wanted. We made an adjustment in the second half and it allowed us to have the ball more in their half and I think it resulted in us scoring. We played pretty darn good, they played good, it was a good game, and to have a point is probably fair for both teams."

Cane and his team will now look ahead to Sunday's matchup against Augustana. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM at Malosky Stadium. It will be the team's final Sunday home game of the year and the team will celebrate Parents Day at halftime of the match.
