The 2022 Toyota Tundra Got Serious Suspension Upgrades

The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims have the base setup. It includes double wishbones in the front that are new but similar to the outgoing model. The back has outboard coil springs and a multilink architecture with a solid axle.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has an incredibly enhanced ride. Thanks to a few suspension upgrades, the new Toyota Tundra is better equipped for on-road comfort and dominating off-roading challenges.

Things have been changing for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, thanks to its total redesign. The prior generation offered four different suspension options, but now the new Tundra offers six. All this information is pretty uplifting. Alright, we’re done with bad truck puns for now.

Anyways, the redesign features the new platform that the Land Cruiser uses. The Tundra now has a fully boxed frame, while its predecessor had a boxed frame under the cab with reinforced or open C-channels in the bed.

Another big change involves the use of coil springs instead of leaf springs. Leafs are excellent for vertical stability but not the best for side-to-side stability. Coils also allow for the Toyota to include optional rear air springs, which the leafs prevented. Adaptive shocks are available too.

What are the six Toyota Tundra suspension options?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims have the base setup. It includes double wishbones in the front that are new but similar to the outgoing model. The back has outboard coil springs and a multilink architecture with a solid axle. Both of the axles have passive twin-tube shocks, and the front suspension includes coil springs.

The TRD Port setup is optional for the SR5. With the TRD Sport Package, you get a half-inch lower ride height that swaps in sport-tuned shocks and springs.

The TRD Off-Road suspension is available for the SR5, Limited, and 1794 Edition. IT includes off-road suspension tuning with Bilstein shocks and comes with skid plates and mudguards. If you opt for four-wheel drive, an electronic locking rear differential and terrain-selection controls are also included.

You also get the Toyota Crawl Control system that will maintain selectable single-digit speeds while adventuring. That’s right. We said if you opt for 4×4. This package is offered without 4×4 and is primarily cosmetic.

The TRD Pro is an entirely different trim with its own setup that includes thicker diameter Fox internal-bypass shocks. They are 2.5-inches instead of 1.8-inches like the Bilstein shocks. It also consists of a 1.1-inch suspension lift and a wider front stabilizer bar that’s 20 percent thicker. High-strenght covers protect the engine, fuel tank, and transfer case.

What else is available for the new Tundra?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has optional air springs. They are available on the S5R, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims. The rear air springs replace the coils and can raise the height by up to 2.5-inches. They aren’t available with the TRD models.

Adaptive shocks are available on the Platinum and 1794 Edition. They are marketed as the Toyota Adaptive Variable Suspension System. They replace passive shocks and can only be paired with air springs.

Each suspension option can be paired with both of the Toyota Tundra’s engines, including the 3.5-liter V6 and the i-FORCE Max Hybrid. The Hybrid model has unique suspension tuning due to its weight, but the end results are pretty similar.
