Affordable housing, mass transit must play big roles in redevelopment.

Re “They lost the first battle for San Diego’s sports arena site. Now they’re mounting a comeback” (Oct. 17): The proposed Midway Village+ seems interesting, but suggests transportation issues.

Perhaps the city can insist that any proposal incorporating entertainment venues (sports arena, stadium) must include major funding towards a trolley extension.

A loop line running downriver from Old Town, through Midway, down to Harbor Drive, then south through the airport terminal, and connecting again perhaps at the Santa Fe Depot would serve these new venues and also meet a goal of trolley service to the airport.

I’ve been following the saga of the sports arena over the last year with anticipation. Affordable housing is a must for this site, and the teams in the fold seem to be making it a priority. One team, though, seems to be disingenuous with claims about affordable housing.

Just a few months ago, a team member of Midway Village+ from London Moeder Associates wrote an opinion piece titled “The public is not better served by providing affordable housing at the sports arena site” (May 6). This should be cause for serious pause for San Diegans with the Midway Village + claims.
