There’s a theoretical ideal NFL run-pass ratio range which depends on a team’s personnel and the game situations they face. It may well hover below 30.0% for a team with Brady or Mahomes at quarterback, established playmakers across the skill positions, and Bruce Arians or Andy Reid supervising the game plans. The Eagles have novice coaches, a quarterback with 10 career starts, and speedy but inexperienced wide receivers. Even after the Zach Ertz trade, the strength of their offense is Sanders, the offensive line, and tight end. They need to be “balanced”—we’re talking about running the ball at least one-third of the time in neutral situations here, not caveman stuff—if they hope to remain competitive and give Hurts a fair chance to develop. There’s a valid argument to be made that the Eagles’ underlying problem isn’t a low run-pass ratio, but the fact that Nick Sirianni and his coaches may have no idea what they are doing. That leads us directly into our next segment. [...] And then there are the Eagles, who have attempted the fewest passes over the middle of any team in the NFL. You know, the team that had Ertz until last Friday and still has Dallas Goedert at tight end? The team that only runs 23.8% of the time? The team with Miles Sand … forget it. And take a look at that ANY/A, which is higher than any team on the over-the-middle passing leaderboard. (The Seahawks lead the NFL in ANY/A for this category, though not for long). So the Eagles appear to excel at rushing and at throwing over the middle. They also appear built to do both those things well, even with Ertz gone. Yet they do both of those things far less than any other team in the NFL. That’s a quality control issue. It’s a coaching experience issue. It’s a freakin’ common sense issue. Sirianni better figure out the obvious in a hurry, because his career, Hurts’ career, and the future of the franchise depends on it.

The issues this offense has when attacking the field are myriad, but most are centered around Hurts’ limitations as a passer and head coach Nick Sirianni’s as a play-caller, especially in attacking the middle of the field. Sirianni doesn’t trust the young quarterback to work through concepts in that area, and Hurts is an unwilling participant in throwing the ball into windows that aren’t ideal, as he’s only comfortable working progressions going toward his dominant (right) hand. Tampa Bay played with two-high safeties on half of Hurts’ 33 dropbacks, and he completed just five passes for 30 yards. Tampa Bay sat on underneath routes and dared Hurts to make tight-window throws over and over again. His aversion to the middle of the field is counterintuitive because throws near the sideline are typically reserved for an elite class of arm talent that Hurts simply doesn’t have. If the play is designed for Hurts to move the pocket, he looks to bail if the first look in the progression isn’t there. He’s not looking to attack the defense nearly enough as a runner, and Philadelphia doesn’t trust him enough to consistently make deep throws.

31-21, Raiders. I think Las Vegas is closer to being a complete team whereas Philadelphia is still trying to figure out its identity and what they have in some of their young players. As long as the Raiders can get the ball out quick and can take care of the two defensive tackles I mentioned above, I think they’ll have no problems putting points on the board. I am very interested to see how the battles between Maxx Crosby/Yannick Ngakoue and Jordan Mailata/Lane Johnson plays out, though. I think those will be the key matchups when the Eagles have the ball.

Sirianni has a boss, too. Lurie has been omnipresent at practice this season, for whatever reason. There used to be a joke among former coaches that if you didn’t see the Eagles owner until Friday, you knew he felt good about his team. Lurie met with predecessor, Doug Pederson, every Tuesday during the season, but Sirianni said he has no such scheduled meeting. “We talk all the time,” Sirianni said last month. “This is an awesome organization in the sense that Mr. Lurie is at practice all the time, so I get to talk to him every day at practice.” Pederson had an agreeable personality, which may have influenced Lurie’s increased involvement. There is obvious concern that Sirianni’s inexperience and his amicable nature will allow for the owner and general manager Howie Roseman to overrun him. But several sources who have worked with Sirianni caution against the perception that he can be manipulated. He is his own man, they said, and has fundamental beliefs that are written in granite, which is why, when they aren’t carried out by others, he can flip like a switch. “I think it’s an intensity, like, ‘Hey, there’s a standard that is set, and if you meet the standard, then we’re really excited about it,’” Sirianni said last month. “If you don’t meet the standard, then we’ve got to correct it.

Marks: The Raiders surprised me last week, playing with added motivation, instead of calling it quits. I expect that to carry over at home this week vs. the Eagles. Carr is leading the league with the most most completions of 20 yards or more, and incorporated a lot more play-action last week to spice things up a bit. The Raiders defense does not blitz much, and is good against the pass, so expect Hurts to rush more in order to move the chains. Pick: Raiders -3, Hurts over 8.5 rushing attempts (-115).

Marc Ross: For some reason, Miles Sanders has been persona non grata in the Eagles’ offense, which has the fewest carries by running backs in the NFL this season. But against an emotionally charged Raiders team under new leadership, Sanders finally gets opportunities and takes advantage of them. He logs his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, and the fourth of his career, as he leads the Eagles to an upset win.

General Manager Howie Roseman let Goedert know about the Ertz trade and had a special message for Goedert as the Eagles turn the position over to a player they think has all the skills to be a top-flight tight end – great receiving skills, big-play ability after the catch, a solid blocker, and a matchup advantage for the Eagles. “He just said, ‘Really excited for you. I’m excited for you to be the guy, the one tight end who is in there all the time, the three-down tight end that I think I can be.’ Really excited for me,” said Goedert, who said he felt sore and tired and very, very bored during his time away from the team. “I’m stepping into a little bit more of a leadership role in the tight end room and in the locker room as a whole. I’ve always been waiting for this. I want to be able to play every play. I want to be a three-down tight end.”

Gowan said he prided himself on his coverage ability, saying he wants to bring “Gowan Island” to Philadelphia.

The Raiders made Denver quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s life miserable Sunday as they constantly pressured him. The Raiders pressured him 33 times. It helped force Bridgewater in throwing three interceptions and losing a fumble. if the Raiders can have the same impact on Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts, it could be another big day for the Las Vegas defense. Hurts is still a young quarterback who can be forced into making mistakes. Las Vegas can’t make it easy on this beatable quarterback, but given the chance, he can be dangerous on the ground.
