FORT VALLEY, Ga. - A mass shooting in Fort Valley Friday night has left one person dead.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the shooting happened at an off-campus party along Carver Drive in Forty Valley. Investigators say a total of eight people were shot. One of the eight people shot has died.
Nelly Miles with the GBI tells WGXA News, contrary to earlier reports, this was not an officer-involved shooting and no officers have been injured.
WGXA News has also confirmed the person that died is not a student at Fort Valley State University.
In a media release from Fort Valley State University, school officials confirm some of those injured are students, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
The campus was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The lockdown has since been lifted.
This shooting happened just hours before FVSU was set to celebrate homecoming. School officials have announced this morning's alumni breakfast and the homecoming parade have been canceled.
School officials tell WGXA News there will be increased security protocols in place for the homecoming game scheduled for later Saturday.
