Since the pandemic began, stress levels have increased and remained elevated for a significant portion of the population. Social isolation, health restrictions, travel restrictions, political disagreements and losses of loved ones have manifest as increased reports of anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, substance abuse and worsening health conditions.

When reading about ways to improve mental health, it has become common to see recommendations of deep-breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, exercise and taking a break from the news. Pet support and animal-assisted therapy also have significant potential as stress management options.
