Area Roundup: Willmar volleyball gets No. 2 seed

Cardinals play New Ulm at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Big Red Gym. Also: Ridgewater falls to Minnesota West and Community Christian soccer team earns an overtime tie.

MOORHEAD — The Willmar volleyball team learned it received the No. 2 seed in the Section 2AAA playoffs Friday after the coaches seeded the section.

The Cardinals are behind No. 1 Marshall (27-2) as expected for the section tournament, which gets underway at 7 p.m. Wednesday for Willmar and the entire section. The Cardinals are host to No. 7 New Ulm (14-9) in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals are 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at the high seed. The final is 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at the high seed.

At stake is a berth in the state Class AAA tournament Nov. 10-13 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

First-round matches in 2AAA are: No. 8 Worthington (15-14) at No. 1 Marshall (27-2); No. 5 St. Peter (19-6) at No. 4 Hutchinson (18-12) and No. 6 Mankato East (10-12) at No. 3 Mankato West (15-10).

Ridgewater started strong, then lost three straight sets to Minnesota West Community & Technical College in Worthington.

“We were unable to make the adjustments necessary on defense tonight to secure the win,” Ridgewater head coach Amanda Bohlsen said. “We now look to tomorrow’s game in Austin.”

The Warriors play Riverland Community College at noon Saturday in Austin.

Against the Lady Jays, Harley Kunstleben led the attack with 10 kills. Madi Leyendecker had 27 set assists and Tayler Schmidt had 23 digs.

Community Christian and Valley Christian played to an overtime tie in a Christian Athletic League match played in Willmar.

Will Chapin, Eduardo Montejano and Gibson Horyza scored goals for CCS. Chapin also had two saves. Juan Ramirez had three saves in goal for the Eagles.
